I could sit here and tell you that everything you have learned or even heard about guitar theory is a bald face lie. But the fact is no one knew any better. Over the last three decades I have taken lessons from 4 different guitar players, all who could really play. And each one had a differnt approach.
My first teacher taught me the old Mel Bay way.
Start with notes and notation. Twinkle Twinkle and stuff like that.
It was all memorization (never my long suit). I got bored and quit after 4 lessons.
My second teacher taught me some "Lead patterns" I could use. Simple enough just slide them up the neck when the key changed. But I really didn't know what notes I was playing or why.
The third teacher taught me some riffs I wanted to know and figured out the chords to some songs. He was a great player and a good teacher and a great guy.
But I was getting stuck in certain places and I couldn't put it all together.
My last teacher was really great. He taught me the CAGED system. This is the best system I have found and you can really organize the entire fretboard using this method. I even made one of my DVDs about the CAGED system. The Ultimate Fretboard. You may even own it. If you do and you spent time learning the basic CAGED system then you are far ahead of most guitar players.
But the Ultimate Fretboard really only scratched the surface. I kept meaning to produce an update but it kept being put off. Finally last fall I started working on the update.
I got deep into the theory of the guitar. Went over every form, scale and chord.
Thats when it hit me.
LIKE A TON of BRICKS.
Along the way I discovered something that has been kept under wraps by the powers that be.
Thats the only way I can see it.
I mean what I have discovered is so incredibly simple that someone must have discovered this before me.
But as I try to find where this simple theory and approach to guitar has been taught to the public I run into nothing but dead-ends.
Its like the Da Vinci Code for Guitar.
At first I flat out didn't believe it.
How could something so simple have been in front of my nose for so many years and me not see it.
And why couldn't anyone show me?
So I slept on it. Maybe it was just my tired mind playing tricks on me.
I woke up the next day and started
to test. Test from every angle to see if my theory would hold water.
I approached the theory from every angle from all the different approaches to guitar I had been taught over my 30 years. Scale theories, Chord theories, Modal even Non-western theories.
It held together. I stepped back.
You can imagine the number of emotions that were running through my mind. Elation, Fear, Confusion, Disbelief.
It was as if I discovered gravity.
So obvious that it took 10,000 years and an apple to discover.
Then I was struck with parayzing fear.
Would anyone believe me?
Would I be locked up as some lunatic or perhaps end up the handy work of a goverment hitman.
I knew I couldn't tell anyone at first. so I sought out the greatest guitar minds I know. Guys who are into serious Jazz theory and stuff like that.
I mean complete music theory, jazz theory freaks.
At first they refused to believe it.
Next they tried to shoot holes in it. finally after thoroughly testing every corrolary and deconstructing the proof.
They agreed. The theory was "brain-dead" simple. And Bullet proof.
In a way it was tragic. These guys were my idols. I mean I had learned so much from them and now thier lifes' work shown to be a lie or at least misguided.
They had made everything so complicated and yet it was so simple even a child could master it.
Now armed with the confidence I was right, I immediately videod the entire process. At every turn everything about the guitar became clearer and clearer.
It was like the first time riding a bike.
It felt like flying.
